Let's Begin with 12 Principles

Hitendra Wadhwa is the Founder of the Mentora Institute, a Professor at Columbia Business School, and the author of "Inner Mastery, Outer Impact".

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

One day, in the pre-internet age, I drove from my home in Palo Alto to Yosemite National Park at the invitation of two friends camping there. This was going to be my first time at Yosemite, and I had not seen any photos of the park. I had no idea what to expect.

It was dark by the time I reached the Yosemite gates. I was greeted by park rangers and given a map. A long and winding road took me to the valley within. As I drove the final stretch, a blanket of peace fell over me. My spirit began to soar, and my thoughts became clearer. Nature—with its gurgling brooks, rustling leaves, and starlit sky—was casting a spell.

I arrived at my friends’ campground in the pitch of darkness and was soon happily asleep, imagining we were in a lush meadow surrounded by hills.

Darkness gave way to dawn

When I awoke and walked out of my tent the next morning, I was instantly awestruck. Towering rock formations shooting up toward the skies from everywhere, a waterfall roaring down from one of the mountains, the color green taking on a thousand hues, and vistas upon vistas. It was nature at its rapturous best.

I had not known this was the paradise I had entered the night before and so casually slept in. The sheer splendor of Yosemite Valley was breathtaking, and the feelings of grandeur and beauty it evoked have never left me. I recall feeling like I was in the presence of something divine.

Welcome to the 12 Principles Series

Over the next few weeks, I’ll guide you through 12 principles that have shaped my life and work, and that I hope will shape yours. These reflections invite you into your inner core—the wellspring of clarity, strength, and fulfillment that lies within.

Meet your guide

I’m Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa. It’s a great joy to meet you.

From the time I was ten, I’ve felt a deep hunger to explore some of life’s hardest and most exhilarating questions:

  • Where did I come from?
  • Where will I go upon death?
  • Is there justice, order, and wisdom in the universe?
  • What is my highest potential?
  • How can I forge a connection not simply to my family, community, nation, or humanity—but to all of life?

Take a moment to reflect:
Have you ever pondered these questions yourself?

These very questions became the compass for my inner life. They led me to explore many of the world’s mystic traditions, study the scriptural wisdom on my father’s bookshelf, and engage in lifelong conversations with a community of monks. At seventeen, I seriously considered dropping out of school to become a monk and dedicate myself to the pursuit of deeper truths. But life had other adventures in store.

How I teach these ideas today

Today, I teach leadership at Columbia Business School and lead the Mentora Institute. My work focuses on helping people become high-performing, fulfilled, and authentic leaders. At Mentora, we guide individuals to cultivate their inner core and align it with their outer impact through the framework of Five Core Energies.

We call this path Inner Mastery, Outer Impact.

Let’s take a drive

Through this newsletter, I invite you to go on a drive of your own, with me as your companion.

Your path may sometimes be rugged or winding. At times, you may not see much. But what if I told you there’s a deep well of peace, wisdom, love, and joy waiting at your destination—your inner core?

What if the glimpses you catch along the way—those flashes of insight or inspiration—are just a drop in the ocean of truth that lives within you?

This core already exists inside you. It is ready to offer its treasures whenever you awaken to its presence.

And I believe discovering it may be even more awe-inspiring than arriving in Yosemite Valley.
